How to retrieve a lob that gets over your head
Let’s say you find yourself at the net. Your opponent hits a lob that goes over your head but you don’t want to give up on it… How do you get that ball back?
There are many ways you see the pro players doing it but here are two that we consider the easiest to execute:
1. Run around the ball
If the Lob is slower and shorter in your court what you would do is to turn to the left (or the non-dominant side) and run back having your forehand grip ready. Run so that the ball travels and bounces to the side of your non-dominant hand. Once you catch up with the ball, prepare with the Forehand grip and wait for the ball to drop about waist/chest high. Plant your inside foot (right) and strike the ball low to high aiming high over the net.
This technique involves a 360 degree turn so keep your balance as you turn and hit the ball.
2. Scoop the ball over the left shoulder
If the Lob is deep and you have a hard time running around the ball, than use the “Scoop”.
Just turn towards the non-dominant side and run back to chase the ball. Try to stay behind the ball’s trajectory.
After it bounces, change your grip to Continental and prepare the racquet face in front of you and facing up. Wait for the ball to come down and swing the racquet through it low to high and push the ball over the left (non-dominant) shoulder. Your goal is to send the ball high over the net and deep into the opposite side of the court to have enough time to recover.
