Swing Volley – Forehand

When are you going to Swing Volley?

- when you have an opening just after you take your opponent off the court with a wide shot.
Where are you going to be to Swing Volley?
- about midcourt or closer to the net.

Grip: - Forehand Eastern/Semi-Western (click here for a description)

Preparation:
As you see your opponent struggling with a wide shot you just hit, move forward towards the net! If the ball coming back is high, prepare with your regular forehand grip and begin turning your shoulders and bring the racquet up, shoulder high. Step out with the outside foot and load your weight on it. Take a short backswing keeping your dominant elbow bent and racquet facing down.

Swing and Contact:
The swing volley is very similar to the forehand stroke as far as the execution; the only major difference is that the ball is coming down on the racquet a lot faster and tends to go down after contact a lot more than on the forehand stroke. So begin by lowering your racquet head below the incoming ball and uncoil your hips and shoulders. Push off the ground with the outside foot and swing the racquet low to high and low again in a “windshield wiper” motion through the ball. The “windshield wiper” swing will help you create enough spin to make the ball go over the net and come down due to the extreme spin created this way.
At contact, aim higher than you would normally do on a regular forehand stroke; otherwise you will find yourself sinking the ball into the net!

Follow-through:
After contact, the body keeps turning (uncoiling) and the weight continues to transfer onto the inside foot. The racquet continues to descend and finishes by the inside hip; dominant elbow, elevated, pointed forward towards the target. A well-executed swing volley is frequently a put-away shot but just in case your opponent reaches it, move forward to the net and get ready to finish the point with either a volley or overhead.
